In electrical wiring systems, the inch markings (such as 1/2 ", 3/4") for EMT (electrical metal conduit) and RSC (rigid steel pipe) do not refer to the actual inner or outer diameter, but rather to the nominal diameter code. This standard originates from the North American pipeline system, with the core purpose of unifying accessory connection dimensions and simplifying engineering design and construction selection.
1、 The essence of inches: standardized code
The nominal diameter is indicated in inches (1 "=25.4mm), but the actual size depends on specific standards:
EMT (Thin walled Galvanized Pipe): Lightweight and easy to bend, with an actual outer diameter of about 16mm and inner diameter of about 14mm for 1/2 "pipes;
RSC (Thick walled Seamless Steel Pipe): High mechanical strength, with an actual outer diameter of about 21.3mm and an inner diameter of only 15mm for 1/2 "pipes.
Key difference: Under the same inch size, RSC has a larger wall thickness, but the actual inner diameter is actually smaller than EMT, directly affecting the wire capacity (such as 1/2 "RSC accommodating about 10% less wire than EMT).
2、 Why use nominal diameter?
Universality of accessories: Pipes with the same inch mark can use elbows and joints of the same specifications;
Cross system compatibility: There is an approximate correspondence between the British system (inches) and the metric system (DN) (e.g. 3/4 "≈ DN20);
Simplified design: Engineers do not need to memorize complex actual dimensions, they can select according to specifications.
3、 Precautions for engineering selection
Calculation of wire capacity: According to NEC specifications, the filling rate needs to be calculated based on the actual inner diameter (e.g. 6 6mm ² wires require 1 "EMT);
Accessories are not interchangeable: EMT uses compression type connectors, RSC requires threaded connections;
Avoid size misreading: 1/2 "≠ 12.7mm, actual outer diameter EMT is 16mm, RSC is 21.3mm.
